Scala Colab examines how people and communities interact with their physical, social and organisational worlds and how these interactions shape wellbeing, opportunity and life outcomes.

We are concerned with ‘scaling up’; studying the interface between built elements and human experience and applying this learning to larger projects.

We are just as concerned with ‘scaling down’; sharing impacts at global scale with pioneering local groups, enterprises and micro projects.

About us

Vision

Scala Colab is a social enterprise. It collaborates with governments, businesses, universities and communities. We research, design and inform policy to create inclusive, resilient, sustainable places.

Mission and Objectives

Global urbanisation, climate change and migration and consequent economic, social and environmental transitions are critical challenges for organisations and cities around the world. As the UN Sustainable Development Goals recognise, dealing with these multi-dimensional and still unfolding processes requires new ways of thinking, understanding and problem-solving. Scala Colab fosters a new model that crosses institutional, disciplinary and professional boundaries.

Our mission is to demonstrably contribute to improving lives in the face of these challenges by enhancing wellbeing, increasing resilience and reducing vulnerabilities. We focus on three areas related to our larger mission:

1.      Health and Wellbeing in Buildings and Communities
2.      Environmental Sustainability and Resilience
3.      Social and Economic Sustainability for Neighbourhoods.

We are particularly concerned with distinct experiences, needs and opportunities for women, disadvantaged groups and vulnerable populations.
